Chapter Thirteen

After I reached my car and took several deep breaths and a swallow of water, and my hands quit shaking, I gave some thought to what my plans were for that afternoon. I’d been lucky in the past few minutes but didn’t want to press it.

Instead of going directly to the scary house alone, I phoned Lauren. “You up for driving to the East End? I want to use you for back up.”

“Oh, heck yeah. When are you talking about?”

“Not exactly backup but as a lookout.”

“What are you going to do, rob a bank?”

I liked her. I really did. She had my sense of humor. “No bank robbery today, but I’m going to see a person of interest. How do you like that FBI-type term?”

“And you want me to go with you or what?”

“Kind of like call the police if I never come out.”

“What? Are you sure you should do this? Sounds like you’ll be putting yourself in danger.”

“It’s all part of the job.” I’d never admit the thought made my stomach churn, but if she thought about it, she’d realize that’s why I wanted her to be there. “Can you come or not?”

“Like now? Right this minute?”

“If you could get downtown in forty-five minutes, that’d be great. I’m going to grab a sandwich, and I’ll meet you there.”

“Where exactly? And what do you want me to do?”

I gave her the address and explained what I wanted and went for lunch. Exactly forty-five minutes after our phone call, I parked around the corner from the scary house. Moments later, Lauren pulled in behind me.

She jumped out of her car and ran to my window. “Hey, girl.” She wore white jeans, a starched. white blouse with a white and black print kerchief tied around her neck, and white running shoes. I wondered what she thought we were going to do.

I climbed out and gave her a quick hug. “His house is the one in the middle of the block. So if you could, find a spot where you can watch the door. I’ll wait until you park, and then I’ll venture over there.”

“You didn’t say who this is. Whose house is it?”

I met her eyes and tried to mask the forbidding feeling that must be showing on my face. “A very bad dude I’m hoping to get information from, if not on.”

“And all you want me to do is watch the house?”

“Yes, just in case. In fact,” I pulled a card from my pocket, “I’ve written the name and phone number of a law enforcement officer I know on the back of a card, but don’t call him unless it’s been an hour or so. Okay?”

“Oh, Mavis, you’re kidding—right?”

“I have to talk to this guy.” A laugh erupted out of me, sounding like a hiccup. Was I nervous or what? “Or if someone comes out carrying a bag—a large bag—or a trunk. Or even a large suitcase.”

“Okay, now this isn’t funny.” We’d both been leaning against the front of my car.
